8th Annual EcoJustice and Activism Conference

Members of the public are invited to join activists, students, and scholars for a series of presentations, panels, workshops, and art exhibits addressing current social and environmental injustices. Faculty and students in EMU’s EcoJustice Education Masters Program have organized this event to examine the interactions and interdependencies among diverse cultures, languages, and living systems. This year’s theme, “Disrupting Empire: Education and Activism for a Decolonized World” explores the historically colonizing forces of global economic and cultural empires. This will include discussions related to the historical processes of displacement and dispossession of communities and land, as well as the ways education and activism can disrupt these forces. Featured speakers include: Shailja Patel and Dr. Jodi Byrd on Thursday evening, and Dr. Rebecca Martusewicz on Friday afternoon. Friday’s featured panel is “Changing the Soil: Re-Developing Ypsi's Southside” and Saturday will feature the plenary panel, “The Urgency of Activism in Our Times.” For free registration for the conference or to learn more about the master’s degree in EcoJustice Education at Eastern Michigan University, visit the conference website at
