      Culture Lab Detroit

Culture Lab Detroit is a new design experience hosted by the College for Creative Studies (CCS) and the Detroit Creative Corridor Center (DC3). Imagined by local resident and Creative Director Jane Schulak, Culture Lab Detroit was conceived as a catalyst for conversations and collaborations between Detroit's artists, designers, technologists, and the larger design world.

Culture Lab Detroit will kick off the conversation from 6-8 p.m. Thurs., April 18 at CCS (485 W. Milwaukee, Detroit, MI 48202) with the belief shared experiences will increase awareness and the imprint of Detroit's creative community internationally. The event is free and open to the public.

“This is a world-class town filled with world-class people,” says Jane Schulak, creative director of Culture Lab Detroit. “We hope to connect and inspire the best problem solvers in Detroit with world-class artists and thinkers internationally as a way to increase awareness and the imprint of Detroit's creative community around the globe,” Schulak explains.

Culture Lab Detroit will debut with a panel discussion at the College for Creative Studies featuring world-renowned event designer, author, and installation artist David Stark. Stark is one of the country's most sought-after event designers who is known for his inventive repurposing of free or low-cost materials. Clients include Beyoncé, Martha Stewart, Target, Conde Nast, the National Design Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Opera and many more.

Esteemed panelists include Alison Gas, curator of the new museum designed by Zaha Hadid, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum; Toni Griffin, professor of architecture and director of the J. Max Bond Center and Detroit Future City project manager; and Daniel Caudill, creative director of Shinola. Mark Binelli, author of “Detroit City is the Place to Be,” and contributor to Rolling Stone and the New York Times, will moderate the discussion. Following the lecture, Stark will sign his new book, “The Art of the Party.”
