Free Beaumont community event: A non-opioid approach to chronic pain, ‘Better Living through Electricity’

About 20 percent of U.S. adults had chronic pain and 8 percent had high-impact chronic pain – meaning pain that limited at least one major life activity – in 2016, according to an analysis of National Health Interview Survey data. Michigan health care providers wrote 11 million opioid prescriptions that year, enough to provide every Michigan resident with his or her own bottle of narcotics, according to state data. Also in 2016, Michigan had 1,762 opioid-related overdose deaths or 18.5 deaths per 100,000 persons, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. 2016 is the last year for which there is data.

To fight back against the opioid crisis, Beaumont experts are holding a free panel discussion and Q&A on the evaluation and management of chronic pain. The event is geared toward people with chronic back, leg, arm or pelvic pain; failed knee surgery or peripheral neuropathy.
Physicians Kenneth Peters, M.D.; Michael Sikorsky, D.O.; and Cain Dimon, M.D., will discuss the latest advancements and non-opioid treatment options, including minimally-invasive technologies such as nerve stimulation.

The free event runs from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 30 at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, 3711 West 13 Mile Road, in the Administration Building. Bring your spouse or companion.

Light refreshments will be available. To register, visit www.classes.beaumont.org or call 800-633-7377. For questions, call Tanika Lowe at 248-551-0387.
