      EVENT DETAILS
Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter to “Stampede Scleroderma” at Annual Detroit Zoo Fundraising Run/Walk

On Sunday, June 8, 2014, the polar bears and rhinos won’t be the only creatures stomping around The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Mich. The Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter (SFMC) will “get the herd out” in support of its annual family-friendly fundraising event – Stampede Scleroderma – which aims to raise awareness and critical funds to support research and other resources. Stampede Scleroderma also is dedicated to honoring and celebrating those patients suffering from the debilitating disease, which has no known cause or cure.

Stampede Scleroderma, an annual event that is part of the organization’s “Family Adventure Day,” which is now in its 35th year, will include a chip-timed 5K and 10K race through the historic Huntington Woods community, adjacent to The Detroit Zoo. The celebration also includes a walk or leisurely stroll around the zoo, with teams competing in a friendly scavenger hunt. In addition to free admission to the zoo, the event will feature live entertainment, mascots, a tin can auction, make-and-take children’s projects and refreshments. Registration opens at 7 a.m. for an 8 a.m. event start.

Registration for all portions of Stampede Scleroderma is open now at www.scleroderma.org/Michigan. Costs to participate in the walk, 5K and 10K range from $30 to $45, depending on level of participation and timing of enrollment. For those unable to attend but interested in supporting the cause, online donations are being accepted. Additionally, fundraising is not required to participate in Stampede Scleroderma, but is strongly encouraged. Top “herd” (team) event fundraisers will be recognized and rewarded, and in addition, walkers and runners who raise $50 or more to fight scleroderma will get a free Stampede Scleroderma t-shirt.

All event proceeds benefit the Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter. Scleroderma is a crippling autoimmune disorder characterized by a thickening and hardening of the skin that is so severe, it steals away the use of patients’ fingers, hands and limbs. As it advances across their bodies, the uncontrolled growth of fibrous tissue also can damage patients’ hearts, lungs and other organs, often leading to a prolonged and painful death. There is no known cause or cure for the disease.

The Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter is part of the largest patient-based organization in the U.S. dedicated to providing the support, advocacy and research necessary to provide counsel for patients, and ultimately help discover a cure.
