Heritage Conference 2019: Telling Your Story

This year’s Heritage Conference will provide communities with ideas and strategies to tell their stories. Stories that can be leveraged to attract more visitors and enrich your community’s sense of place for residents and businesses. Methods, techniques and the role story telling plays in keeping the heritage of important people, places and events alive for future generations will be profiled. As 2020 ushers in Oakland County’s Bicentennial, the conference provides a primer on methods and media for any group or individual preparing to tell the story of Oakland County’s rich heritage.

The conference features several presentations by historians and skilled story tellers, including Carol Bacak-Egbo, Historian & Project Advisor, Oakland County Parks; and Rad Jones, retired from the U.S. Secret Service.

The sessions will be held in the restored calf barn. The day also includes tours of Stoney Creek Village; the Van Hoosen Farmhouse, a 16-acre museum complex dating back to 1823 and on the National Register of Historic Places; and the restored 1927 dairy barn which includes well-designed, informative exhibits highlighting the settlement, agriculture, industry and cultural evolution of the community. The museum serves as the repository for artifacts and archives related to the greater Rochester area.
